Did You Look at Your Pocket Change Today?

This is just a short note to encourage you to look closely at your pocket change every time you leave the store.

  • If the coin looks funny-put it aside

  • If the coin is really old, early 60’s- put it aside

  • If the coin is really, really old like something you seldom see in pocket change-put it aside

and

  • If the coin is shiny and brand new-put it aside.

Grab one of the books featured on this site and read about the coins you just put aside. Ok?

Did You Know That Some of The New Presidental Dollar Coins May Have Errors

presidential-coin

I just recently read about some of the errors on the new presidental dollar coins. There is a great, easy to read, book on error coins  by Brian Allen and Ken Potter. It is called: Strike It Rich with Pocket Change.

One of the most interesting errors are found on the edge of the coins. You see, the new coins have writing on the edges. Some are missing writing, for example and that makes it an error coin. Of course the book shows you great pictures and indicate other errors as well as the average value.

Why is this important?

There are collectors that specialize in error coins. They will pay for coins to add to their collection as well as sell coins that have certain types of errors. Trust me, after you read this book  you will never look at any coin, regardless of the date, the same way you did before.

Now if you want to really see some error coins that are selling just go to an online auction like Ebay and search for error coins. That will be fun and educational.

Unopened Bags of Puerto Rico Coins Purchased at Mint Go For Higher Price on Ebay

I am observing that Puerto Rico Quarters are selling for higher than the purchase price from the Us Mint on Ebay. I am told that it is because the mintage was low for these new quarters.

I am sure there are other reasons but for now I see where an intial investment in these uncirculated coins is a good thing.

I was also told that you should not open the bag. The reason is because some collectors want to search the bag themselves for error coins.

In additon investors who purchased both mint marks, (S and D) are getting greater value. I am still very new at this so any insights from others would be appreciated.
