Do You Have Any War Nickels in Your Pocket Change?

What are War Nickels?

War nickels are Jefferson nickels  made during the years of the war (1942-1945). The nickel was needed for the war effort so it was taken out of the nickel and replaced with 35% silver.

So, these nickels are, of course, going to be worth more than 5 cents because of the value of the silver at the time you redeem it. Remember that silver prices change daily. When you want to check on the price of silver for any given day just click on this like for the price of silver.

What do I do if I find a War Nickel in my pocket change?

If you are building a collection of nickels of course you can them to your collection. But if you are just looking to sell them check with your local coin dealer for the value.

You can sell them on Ebay.  Of course the better the condition the better the price. If you nickel looks super great you can get a super price. But note, that you should not attempt to grade your coin.  Check with reference books or get an idea from your coin dealer on the grade of your coin.

If you post it on Ebay you can always take a good picture and suggest that the buyer grades it them self. You can describe it the best you can. Check out the prices for some war nickels that sold  on Ebay.

Stop! Don’t Throw Silver Into Those Automatic Coin Machines

Many folks are using automated coin machine to flip their coins into cash. I am hoping that there are coin collectors helping to count the change that comes out of those machines.

I wish I could get a part time job counting that change. I would find a way to purchase all the old quarters and dimes that contain silver. The only point I want to make is to look through your coins before you dump them into those machines.

Ok, here is a very quick short list of coins to look for before you dump that are worth the value of silver. Of course how much you get is based on the value of silver that day. I have a page tabbed on this site that will give you the price.

  • Nickels-1942-1945 (They have 35% silver
  • Dimes 1946-1964 have 90% silver
  • Quarters 1032-1964 have 90% silver.

I heard about someone who had 290 dimes  with silver in them. They were planning to dump them into the coin machine and did not feel fooling around with rolling or looking at them. A friend convinced them to go to a local coin dealer.  They were able to get  $320 dollars that day based on the price of silver. You do the math.

Looking for The Mint Mark But Can’t Find it?-Nickels

Ok, time to look at the mint mark locations on the nickel.

Liberty Head nickel (1883-1912) -On the reverse(tails) , to the left of the word CENTS. Note: Mint marks appear only on the coins dated 1912)

Buffalo nickel (1913-1938)-On the reverse(tails) below the words FIVE CENTS)

Jefferson nickels-below the date from 1968 to present

Look for it above Monticello on nickes from 1942-1945

Look for it to the right of Monticello on most dates from 1938-1964

Would anyone like to add anything?
